The History of Halloween Costumes

The history of Halloween goes back to the tradition of the Celts. The Celtic people believed that the dead would come back as ghosts on October 31st every year.

Some legends claim that people started dressing up in costumes to scare the dead away. Other legends claim that if people dressed up in scary costumes on October 31st they would scare away the dead.

Eventually, the Celtic people stopped believing in these legends, but they continued to dress up in costumes on Halloween anyway. When the Irish people immigrated to America in droves in the mid 1800’s, they brought the tradition of dressing up in costumes on October 31st with them to America.

The scary costume tradition goes back to that legend of people needing to scare away the dead. As time as passed, the tradition of dressing up has continued without the necessity of Halloween costumes needing to be scary.
