Halloween Costumes Over The Years

Over the years Halloween costumes likes and dislikes have changed. However every Halloween you can bet many children and adults too will opt for the traditional costume of pirate, witch or fairy. Of course over the years Halloween costumes of course have included comic characters and of course TV heroes like superman or bat man or for a female superwoman. Then there are the TV sensations like Lady Gaga or popular actors or singing sensations. Cowboys and ghosts still reign but as each new Disney movie is released the list of modern costume characters increases.
Original Costumes
In some countries before Halloween costumes became commercially popular in the United States ghouls and other worldly creatures were popular and in some countries the day was called ‘guises’ like in Scotland when this was recorded in 1895 because children dress up in a disguise. Earlier they dressed to repel the wandering souls so no otherworld souls settled in their living bodies as they searched for the afterlife. It wasn’t until the 1930’s that Halloween costumes became commercially popular and available in the US. Prior to that time costumes were created at home using simple things such as make up to blacken the face or an old sheet to create a ghost.
Types Of Original Costumes
In the 1930’s you would probably have purchased your commercial Halloween outfit from a five and dime store as these were in every town large or small. These early costumes would have copied the heroes of that timeframe like popular radio personalities, ethnic costumes which are not in favor today, or clowns, hobos or pirates which except for the hobo are still seen out and about today. However today you are more likely to see alien creatures or TV cartoon characters or popular movies series such as Harry Potter.
